Filename: WAM17443 Headline: Close-up of a "debeaked" turkey. This is a process that involves searing off a part of the beak to prevent turkeys from injuring each other and to minimize cannibalism. Debeaking usually occurs when turkeys are 6 to 7 days old. Chile, 2012. Gabriela Penela / We Animals Description: These images were taken as part of the research work undertaken in 2012 by the Chilean organization EligeVeganismo documenting the reality of animals in the meat industry. Shown here are the sheds where turkeys are fattened as part of the production process for their meat. In Chile, poultry meat is one of the most consumed compared to other types of meat. In South America, Chile ties with Brazil as the highest consumer of poultry meat per capita, with consumption having steadily increased over the last 10 years. Chile also exports turkey meat to Argentina. To meet this increasing demand, Chilean turkey farmers have utilized selective breeding practices and house the animals in intensive breeding sheds. Inside the sheds, which are located throughout the different regions of Chile, lack of cleanliness and physical space increases the danger of injury and cannibalism amongst the birds. Dirty bedding can become embedded within the turkey’s legs and it is not uncommon to find injured and dead turkeys among the living.
