Filename: WAM19970 Headline: A mud pond for raising juvenile tilapia and other freshwater fish, surrounded by a fruit garden at a small fish farm. Thailand, 2021. Mako Kurokawa / Sinergia Animal / We Animals Description: This small-scale tilapia fry (juvenile) raising facility consists of ten 90-metre by 12-metre ponds, each approximately 2-metres deep. This farm supplies fry of various types of tilapia to small-scale tilapia rearing farms and, according to the farmer, also to Thailand's Department of Fisheries. The tilapia fry, which are naturally herbivorous, are fed a diet that includes catfish formula containing fishmeal, though rice bran was observed being fed to the red tilapia fry. Unlike large-scale industrial fish fry farms, this farm does not use hormones to artificially produce monosexed fish fry (usually male), a common practice in tilapia aquaculture. This farm also does not use antibiotics to control disease. Within the ponds, whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), a scavenger species, are used to consume the bodies of dead fish and to keep the water clean. Water for the ponds is taken from a nearby river via a canal, and must be treated before it is suitable for the fish. According to the farmer, they use natural methods to improve the water. The farm keeps various species of fish in separate ponds, though some fish will escape into other species' ponds through the farm's water-pumping system. For the population of Thailand, a Southeast Asian country of nearly 70 million people, fish are a primary source of protein. This coastal nation has a massive aquaculture industry and is one of the world's major exporters of seafood, but its supply chain remains relatively obscure. Though farmed like terrestrial animals, the welfare of fish raised in aquaculture is often overlooked, and reports of their mishandling and poor living conditions have been increasing the world over. In collaboration with Sinergia Animal, during a week-long investigation, We Animals documented the supply chain and welfare of widely farmed fish species in Thailand's aquaculture industry, specifically focusing on tilapia, of which Thailand is a significant world producer.
