A common way to collect blood from mice is to insert a needle into their heart—a procedure called cardiac puncture. They are partially euthanized ahead of the procedure, by being left in the carbon dioxide chamber for longer durations to halt their breathing, while their heart beats and blood flows. Blood is collected this way to analyze antibodies for proteins and to look at fresh cells in medical research. USA, 2022. Roger Kingbird / We Animals
