A female calf, called a heifer, gazes into the camera from inside a pen on a Polish dairy farm. Calves are separated from their mothers within days of birth and placed in small pens or plastic hutches. Unlike male bull calves, heifers stay on the farm to become dairy cows, replacing the cows already used for their milk. Poland, 2022. Andrew Skowron / We Animals
