Bleeding pangasius fish lie in a crate at a wholesale fish auction market. Pangasius and species such as rohu, catla (katla), tilapia and other species are commonly farmed in the area. Harvested fish are not slaughtered before reaching the market, slowly suffocating and often remaining alive for hours after removal from water. Many exhibit cuts, bruises, missing scales, bulging and injured eyes or other signs of trauma from rough handling. Akividu Wholesale Fish Market, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India, 2023.
