Description:
On January 7, 2025, wildfires erupted in the densely populated area north of downtown Los Angeles, California, USA. Fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, the fires quickly escalated into massive blazes that, within 48 hours, raced through the region, devastating much of the area north and northeast of the city.
These images document animal rescue efforts in the Eaton and Palisades regions, where two of the most significant fires occurred. The fast-moving fires spread across more than 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres), decimating thousands of buildings and scorching rural land.
In Pasadena and surrounding communities, stadiums and equestrian centers were repurposed as emergency large-animal shelters. Volunteers and first responders provided food, water, and medical care to displaced and injured animals, including horses from nearby ranches and stables.
As of January 20, 2025, nearly 100,000 residents remain under evacuation orders. The fires have destroyed upwards of 12,000 homes and structures, while regional animal shelters are strained by thousands of injured and displaced animals in their care. At least 25 people have lost their lives as the blazes continue in the region.
