Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals Description: Dakshinkali Temple outside of Kathmandu is devoted to the Hindu goddess Kali. Animals, mostly chickens and goats, are sacrificed twice each week and during festivals, with many devotees traveling long distances to make their offering. Some people choose to offer coconuts and sweet potatoes instead of animals. Once the animals have been washed, blessed, and slaughtered, they are butchered on site, and families return home with their meat.
