Headline:
The discarded carcasses of dead Pekin ducks lie in a dumpster a few hundred metres from a Brome Lake Ducks facility. Most of the ducks have been cut open, and it appears as though the upper coelomic cavity was being targeted, possibly to collect samples from their heart, lungs, or trachea. Description:
After an outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) at three of its facilities, Brome Lake Ducks has killed 200,000 ducks using carbon dioxide gas and was ordered to destroy 400,000 duck eggs by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The company is Canada's largest producer of Pekin ducks with 13 sites across Quebec.
H5N1 is affecting millions of wild and domesticated bird populations in North America, Europe, and Asia. According to the CFIA, "The source of the outbreak is most likely the wild bird population. Scientific evidence indicates that the avian influenza (AI) virus circulates naturally in wild birds, and is spread through migratory birds. The virus is spread by direct contact with live diseased poultry or surfaces and objects contaminated by their feces."
As of April 27, 2022, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) 33.38 million birds are affected in 29 states and the CFIA has confirmed that 717,000 birds have been affected in Canada, not including those at Brome Lake Ducks.
