Duplin County, North Carolina, USA, 2018. Jo-Anne McArthur / #unboundproject / We Animals Description: Elsie Herring is an environmental activist and the great-granddaughter of a freed slave. Herring became an outspoken activist after a pig CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) replaced the small family farm next door to her family’s property. The farm, like countless others around it, employs the standard industry practice of spraying manure on to fields as a waste disposal system. The spray drifts onto Elsie’s family home every day which has resulted in serious health problems, such as respiratory and skin infections.
