Filename: WAM33001 Headline: A ewe pokes her head through the broken metal wire of a small milking pen as she is hand-milked. Though the process takes approximately 30 seconds to complete, some sheep are so stressed from being milked that they try to escape. Stankovce, Trebisov District, Kosice Region, Slovakia, 2023. Zuzana Mit / We Animals Description: Slovakia has approximately 320,000 sheep. This sheep farm in the village of Stankovce in the east of Slovakia has two flocks: one with about 230 ewes for dairy production and the other with sheep and lambs. The owners of the farm also run a shop selling traditional sheep's milk products including brynza (sheep milk cheese), zincica (a traditional Slovak drink made from sheep's milk similar to kefir) and korbacik (braided steamed cheese). The flock of sheep grazes in the pasture during the spring and summer, and are rounded into pens with a stick for milking. Several sheep seemed to be lame and others had large heavy bells on their necks causing discomfort or abrasions. The milking pens have a makeshift roof to protect the workers from the sun and to provide some shelter from the elements for the sheep as they sleep here at night. The ewes are milked three times a day, by hand, into large containers. During milking the sheep sometimes urinate into the milk container and flies were also observed drowning in the liquid. This did not disrupt the milking process and the milk in the contaminated containers was not disposed of.
