A day-old male piglet with remnants of their umbilical cord still attached sits on a bare slatted floor on a pig farm. Metal walls separate him from other pens, and his mother occupies a nearby farrowing crate outside the frame. Young animals here live in dirty metal pens on top of bare grates, through which their excrement falls into a collection tank below. In the following days, this piglet will castrated without anesthesia and their teeth filed. This farm does not perform tail docking, another common industry practice. Poland, 2021.
